What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of body work developed from different disciplines of oriental medicine, including acupuncture, acupressure and tui na. Shiatsu works to relax and invigorate the body using the body’s own natural energy.
Shiatsu originated in Japan as a holistic therapy for the mind, body and spirit. When use correctly it is useful for emotional pain, as well as physical problems.
The word “Shiatsu” comes from shi, meaning “finger” and atsu meaning “pressure,” although in reality Shiatsu may involve thumb, finger, elbow, and knee or foot pressure. The quality of the pressure is the most important feature and differentiates it from other types of massage. To work with the body’s energy, the pressure must reach through the superficial layers of the body to a deeper level.

Philosophy of Shiatsu
As in traditional Oriental medcine, Shiatsu uses the philosophy of yin and yang. Yin is the quality of matter and substance. Yang is the quality of movement and thought. These qualities are subdivided into the five elements: Earth, Metal, Water, Wood and Fire. Each meridian or pathway of energy in the body is either yin or yang and associated with one of the five elements.
